FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

2000 Tour de Burg Race Report--Stage 7

Thursday, 7-06-00

Today's event will go down as the most grueling day of the 2000 tour and it was the race leader, Jerome Vimpty, proudly climbing upon the podium to take the stage win. A combination of 5 hours of pure singletrack then a journey to see the infamous 2 skinee j's at a charolettsville nightclub has taken its toll on the weary peloton. The riding section of today's stage consisted of 2 crucial time checks on 30 miles of continous western Virginia single track. The first time check had the riders climbing a twisty singletrack then following a technical ridge for an additional 4 miles. The grueling ridge nullified any possible attacks and the lead group kept together for the majority of the ridge. Eventually Maynario opened a small gap and finished 20 seconds ahead of Duffy and Vimpty. The second timed section favored the downhillers featuring a long pull down the autobahn, a technical off camber downhill, a small climb, then a final downhill on the legendary Braley's Pond. Leading the peloton from the start was American Jay Duffy who lost a large section of his big ring on the previous parade. Despite a more than flawed drivetrain, Duffy's pace created a gap on the main field with only Vimpty and Carpellini able to hold on. Eventually Carpellini fell off the pace and Vimpty capitalized on a crash by the American to hit the downhill first. He continued to open his gap and stayed clear winning the section with minutes to spare. Although descending cautiosly, Maynario hammered up the climb to Braley's grabbing more climbing points and overtaking the 2nd place position. Next came Carpellini, a tour veteran who knows how to utilize every bit of downhill to over come his lack of form. It was on this long section that the German Von Keehner suffered a 30 minute time loss dealing him a substantial set back in his grueling battle with Scott for the 3rd spot in the GC. After all this singletrack, the peloton quickly cleaned up in a neighboring stream, made the mandatory stop in the drug tent and headed to C-ville for the concert. Overcoming various navigational delays the peloton reached the venue and were inside fueling on liquid carbohydrates for the long night to come. Each member of the peloton battled for position at the front of the pack anxious to achieve perfect placement for the show. After another hour of intense dancing, jumping, and moshing the peloton regrouped and headed for the burg. Tomorrow promises more pain and suffering especially with the arrival of Chris Eatalot and Irish road specialist Pat Miller. The third and final road stage will take the riders up to Skyline drive on a 75 mile route including 2 sprints and one timed section. The battle for the yellow jersey is far from over with 3 full days of racing remaining.
