FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 2000 Tour de Burg Race Report--Stage 10 Sunday, 7-09-00 On the final day of the 2000 tour de burg Mike Capraro avenged last year's defeat and emerged victorious on the same course that left him in shambles a year ago. A huge peloton rolled out of West Augusta this morning, 23 strong with many fresh potential stage winners in the ranks. As they climbed up the hor de categorie Shenandoah Mtn, Italian Joel Maynario sealed up the climbing championship, leading the pack to the top in his big ring intimidating any would be challengers on the final day. Maynario has been the most consistent climber in the general classification, destroying all GC contenders and most fresh newbies as well. The peloton shredded the first 4 miles of singletrack in a high speed parade pace reveling in the green carpeted bliss. Prior to the first and only time check, stage favorite Chris Eatalot, broke a derailler and had to drop from the stage going home 0 for 3 in the 2000 tour. At the beginning of the first time check, the GC was awarded a 5 minute head start on the remainder of the peloton. This allowed the elite group to enter the 12 miles of utopian ridge top single track ahead of the hungry new faces who could surely ruin a fine tour with their cannibalistic ways. The pace began quite relaxed until the ever aggressive Von Keehner accellerated the group into the singletrack and the race was on for the final day. Vimpty, determined to prove his top form screamed through the singletrack eventually dropping the German and finishing with a strong ride, only 50 seconds off Capraro. When the peloton was released after 5 minutes they attacked the singletrack all anxious to test themselves against the battered peloton. Buschetti set a blistering pace early, ripping through half of the GC before he took a fall and suffered an injury that would put his stage win on hold. Jay Duffy put in yet another strong performance, overcoming sleep deprivation and finishing 3rd. Other than the over achieving Vimpty the remainder of the GC rode quite conservatively today, finishing in their respective order, content to enjoy the best stretch of singletrack in the world. Despite their relaxed pace and depleted bodies, the general classication riders still dominated the peloton's results. After regrouping atop of Jerkemtight fireroad, the peloton headed out to summit south sister knob and enjoy perhaps the finest down hill of the long tour de burg. At the bottom of this smooth, fast, twisty singletrack there were nothing but smiles on the faces of all riders. Except for Buck who had a little dirt too. A quick stop in the feed zone had the riders ready to tackle the last 20 miles of road back to the finish. The beautiful weather graced the group once again with a tail wind to speed the peloton from depths of Deerfield Valley. The general classification all seemed quite happy with a top ten finish and the winners Jerome Vimpty and Susa Haysus headed straight to the bank to cash in their lavish checks. After bathing in champagne and dressed only in tiaras the group took the podium in front of legions of screaming fans. With the elated feeling of completing such a huge tour also comes the sorrow of leaving a life style that has more than dominated our hearts and minds for the past ten days. This race could not have been completed without the love and support of each rider. Not just those in the GC but riders who came to support the tour throughout the week. It was incredible to witness the selflessness of the people who were involved with this event. Each day was beautifully devoid of the whining, ego's, and commercialism that we have come to expect in bike racing and life in general. As we rolled through the singletrack on the final day there were 20+ riders rolling as one happy bunch. The experiences we had endured over the past 10 days solidified friendships that will last forever. See you next year. Stage 10, 7-9-00 1. Mike Capraro @ 6:10:05, 2. Jerome Vimpty + :50, 3.
