FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 2000 Tour de Burg Race Report--Stage 4 Monday, 7-03-00 The Italian Joel Maynario makes it 3 in row setting a tour record and continuing to build on his overall lead in General Classification. Carnage reigned supreme today in the 4th stage of the 2000 tour de burg. Swedish rider Pauli Johsono went down suffering a concussion and broken collarbone after an impressive finish on the first timed climb. Other riders were stricken with fatigue, while some were seen vomiting on the side of the course. The first timed section of today's stage featured a 2000 ft climb up Union Springs to Flagpole knob. An early attack from Maynario led to a splintering of the pack with only Vimpty and Buschetti able to hold on initially. As the leaders began to ascend the technical traverse to Flagpole, Maynario pulled away from his rivals, creating over a minute gap on Buschetti by the finish. Today's second timed section promised to deliver excitement with all teams moving their top descenders to the front of the pack. The quick acceleration by the peloton resulted in Johsono's demise as he dove headfirst into the ground. Unbeknownst to the crash and the nullification of the section, 4 riders pressed ahead with Vimpty and Carpellini opening over a minute gap during the gnarly 2000 ft downhill to Hone Quarry plus the remaining road section into Briery Branch. It was the power of Vimpty at the end as he pulled away from a struggling Carpellini who was satisfied with his false moment of glory. It was all for naught and the group paraded back to town with heads low and somber thoughts of their fallen compatriot. Tomorrow's stage will keep the descenders optimistic--including two huge downhills-- opportunities are abound. Stage 4 1. Joel Maynard @ 4:21:38, 2. Paul Buschetti @ 1:38, 3. Jerome Vimpty @ 5:12, 4.
