FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 2000 Tour de Burg Race Report--Stage 6 Wednesday, 7-05-00 Overcoming the curse bestowed on new tour riders, American Jay Duffy won today's stage, with impressive climbing and tactical sprinting. Stage 6 allowed some peloton members to grab some rest as they traveled 75 miles through Massanutten Mtn to Edinburg, Virginia and then home to the burg. The ride featured 3 sprint bonuses and one timed section over slightly smaller mtns than the tour has come accustomed. The first sprint to the edge of Rockingham county had all riders focused on the giant bronze Turkey that marked the line. The pack escalated in response to the typical early attack from Frenchy Squirlmeister, still 5 kilometers from the line. Jenkini couldn't initiate a break and was retrieved by the anxious pack. Once the Turkey came into sight, it was Miguel Carpellini, capitalizing on a Vimpty lead out, taking the win with Vimpty holding on to second and Duffy sneaking in for the final time bonus. Soon after the sprint, the group began the timed section-up Massanutten mtn then down a 10 mile gravel road downhill, where riders reached speeds over 40 mph. After the long and dangerous downhill the peloton rolled through Fort Valley and back up Massanutten mtn for a mountain top finish. The attacks came early as the young Spanish climber Nico Waitito flew up the hill with Maynario and Duffy. Team clean minimized damages on this potentially dangerous climb as super domestique, Paul Buschetti-now out of the GC-pulled a struggling Vimpty to the top keeping pace with the lead trio. The five riders came together at the top of the gravel downhill with the shattered peloton spread out behind. Tragedy struck Italy again as Maynario flatted on this downhill as did the young Spaniard Waitito. The lead group now down to three ascended the final climb with Vimpty and Buschetti finishing together in that order and a Jay Duffy merely 18 seconds behind. Team green veterans Jenkini and Carpellini made a strong push on the gravel, grouping up with Maynario, Scott, and Von Keehner and driving that train to a respectable finish. The second sprint today was on the outskirts of Edinburg after a steep and twisty downhill off Massanutten Mtn. Despite various breakaway attempts by the tour's best descenders, the pack was together for the final 200 kilometers. Maynario used great position to power in first with Von Keehner and Lentholo hot on his wheels. After stopping at the feed zone, the peloton began the 32 mile ride back towards the burg anticipating the final sprint bonus-at this point the stage victor was still a mystery. The final sprint into Timberville featured a hard left hander, a small roller and some bumper cars before the line. A long, high speed lead out by George Willets got the peloton into town together but a vehicular infraction split the field leaving 5 riders to contend the sprint. It was Jay Duffy powering around Chris Scott and across the North Fork of the Shenandoah to grab the sprint and the first stage win by an American in the 2000 tour. The GC saw more action today as Vimpty lengthened his lead to 20 minutes and the battles through the lower ranks continued. Rumor has arisen that tomorrow British powerhouse, Chris Eatalot, will be present with a special dose of pain and suffering for a some what rejuvenated peloton. Regardless of the new faces, stage 7 will require riders to focus their remaining energy as they duel for over 5 hours, all on classic Virginia singletrack. Stage 6-July 6, 2000 1.
