2000 Tour de Burg Race Report--Stage 8

Friday, 7-07-00

Calling on his top form and savvy road skills, American Jay Duffy grabbed his second straight stage win against todays' strong peloton. Welcoming the British super pro, Chris Eatalot, the peloton toured the beautiful Skyline Drive during the 71 mile stage 8. The first sprint line was located on the bridge over the Shenandoah River in Port Republic, Virginia. There were many new faces in the peloton today and an early attack by the Irishman Patrick Miller escalated the pace during the last 5 kilometers. When the dust settled, Duffy had struck first with Scott and Carpellini grabbing the other bonuses. The only timed section in today's stage began shortly after sprint one and climbed a fast gravel road for six miles. Now atop the Blue Ridge Mountains, the riders picked up Skyline drive and headed north for another 17miles. The pace escalated quickly thanks to numerous non-GC riders hungry for a coveted stage win. It was Eatalot, the spanish climbing wonder Waitito, Duffy, and Maynario who broke free on the long climb. Once on the drive Eatalot attacked the group bringing Duffy along and creating a formiddable gap on the other two riders. Determined to finish with the lead group, Waitito used his spritely climbing legs to bridge this large gap and finish with Duffy and Eatalot, fifty seconds ahead of Maynario. The weather was unseasonally pleasant for July, temperatures on Skyline Drive were in the high seventies with low humidity and incredible visibility. Perhaps it was the favorable conditions that encouraged the pack to finish so strong today, all riders respectably close to the lead group. The final sprint came after a high speed descent through Swift Run gap and into Elkton. Initial attacks by French and Carpellini were easily thwarted and again Duffy picked the right time to make his jump and pull in the second sprint and seal his victory. An even larger peloton is expected for tomorrow's mtn stage which will include 2 large timed sections promising rider's 5 hours in the saddle. With 3 big time checks remaining, this race is far from over and each rider understands what could happen at any moment. Perfect weather conditions have been forecasted creating an ideal arena for this final showdown.
