Operation BOB v.Kaylors Knob
Howdy trail lovers,

Just wanted to initiate what I consider round 1 of operation BOB. The 1st step was the IMBA trail building school and educating as many people as possible on the art of trail maintenance. If all operates smoothly operation BOB will bring everyone involved to a new trail every week while making that new trail a better trail. This will be achieved by taking a BOB trailer with tools into a trail, leaving it for a week and having folks who are looking for a direction to ride to hit that trail and spend as much time as they desire giving the trail some love. 15 minutes to many hours - anything will make a big difference. I plan to use www.mountaintouring.com -TRAILS page as a forum to track some of our favorite trails and keep everyone abreast of the condition of our super treasured trails. This week Massanutten Ridge the downhill from Kaylors Knob to the western slope is the targeted trail. I just took a BOB trailer with 2 McClouds to the 1st switchback coming down off of Kaylors.
I noticed 3 sections that need work.
1- the 1st long straight away from the sitting rock down to the 1st switchback (tool location). This area is has to be deburmed and needs a few water bars (rolling grade dips) it is just funneling water down the trail.
2. the deep and steep shoot down to the creek is narrow and trenched keeping water on the trail. When it was built it didn't get a slight slope down hill 5% grade. It could use a new bench/slope starting with the rut and working out, with possibly a few rolling grade dips.
3. the final section is just before the trail joins with the Massanutten Resort trail network. The issue again is water running on the trail. It was getting dark when I got there so I am not sure what the best plan of attack is for this area. If anyone gets a good chance to study it and make a recommendation I will post it on the site.
If you are looking for a reason to ride- get out there and bust a move. The tools will be there till Sunday night. Monday will give you another chance to get intimate with another trail.

Thanks
Chris
Directions: Kaylors Knob trail is at the top of Del Web Drive at Massanutten Resort. A good place to park is near the old guard house on the western slope. Proceed up the paved/gravel climb toward the ski resort overlook. The trail will be on your left after the gate at the top. Heading North it is 2.5 miles to Kaylors Knob. Proceed past Kaylors Knob to the next (only) intersection. This is the sitting Rock. Take a left down to the western slope. Almost right away you will notice trail erosion cause by water running down the trial. This is the problem we would like to fix. Continuing down the trail you will reach Massanutten Resorts network of private trails. Take left at the next intersection onto a very fast doubletrack section. Follow this down to a 90 degree right turn (2nd right). This will bring you into the field at the pond. Follow the fields down to the road at the old Guard House. Please close all gates. Thanks
