The IMBA Epic ride you have heard so much about! It's a big one - an early start is a must. The Traverse is a full day ride, includes lunch and ridge top splendor! This is an advanced level ride that puts you far into the backcountry without emergency access. We do not recommend it without a guide!

Just enough Singletrack to put your mind into another world!

Take a ride into history on the Southern Traverse - IMBA Epic trail 2000 - located in Virginia's George Washington National Forest. Trails stamped in by Civil War soldiers are now available for mountain bikers to march through. The trail head is near the Confederate Breastworks, an army camp created to stop Union troops from reaching Shenandoah Mountain.. The backbone of the Southern Traverse is the south end of the Shenandoah Mountain Trail, a 17-mile singletrack ridge-ride. The snaking trail follows the ridge south and is an amazing melody of smooth and fast downhills and technical rock gardens. Better keep your granny gear on cause there is come climbing too!

Ride Stats:
Elevation: 1,600 to 3,800 ft
Est. Time: 4- 6 hrs (point to point)

The approach to the Traverse with Elliott's Knob in the background is unforgettable. The mountain-top sidehill singletrack is a favorite of many and not so desirable for others. The country road ride back around to the parking area is a great way to reminisce about the wonderful ride you are finishing up. Spring gives you fresh batches of blooms from Redbuds, Dogwoods, and Mountain Laurel with amazing views until mid- May. Fall on the Southern Traverse provides vibrant color from the fall foliage from mid-September to mid-November.
